Martha Johnson

Martha Johnson was pastoring a church in Madison, West Virginia, and Huntington at the same time, driving back and forth to and from both churches until she was officially appointed as the pastor of The Glorious Church of God in Christ in 1975 and moved to Huntington.

She was a true “community pastor” for the Fairfield community and city of Huntington. If she was asked to sing or eulogize a funeral, she made herself available. If tragedy occurred in the neighborhood, she was there to pray and offer her assistance. If anyone needed assistance, she gave it. Everyone was welcome in her church.

Pastor Johnson was the first woman to be president of the Black Pastors Alliance of Huntington and was a member of the Huntington Ministerial Alliance. She was the General Mother of the Glorious Church of God in Christ and a member of the NAACP.

A scholarship has been established in her name because she wanted every young person to have the opportunity to attend college.
